What Time Is It?

To: Leaders and citizens of the world

Re: This is your COVID wake-up call: It is 100 seconds to midnight

Date: January 27, 2021

“Humanity continues to suffer as the COVID-19 pandemic spreads around the world. In 2020 alone, this novel disease killed 1.7 million people and sickened at least 70 million more...In this time of genuine crisis, governments too often abdicated responsibility, ignored scientific advice, did not cooperate or communicate effectively, and consequently failed to protect the health and welfare of their citizens. As a result, many hundreds of thousands of human beings died needlessly.”

This report is part of the 2021 Doomsday Clock Statement, presented by Science and Security Board, Bulletin of the Atomic Scientists.  This board tracks how close the world is to destruction. They stated, “the existential threats of nuclear weapons and climate change have intensified in recent years because of a threat multiplier: the continuing corruption of the information ecosphere on which democracy and public decision-making depend.”

Moreover, mass shootings, worldwide starvation, terrorism, sex trafficking, environmental damage, and plagues also threaten our existence.  Considering these threats, the Bible tells us that it is time for us to wake from our sleep (Romans 13:11-13). We must not be like the lazy person whose field was overgrown from neglect (Proverbs 6:9-11).  God is calling for us to work His will in a world that values fun, frolic, and fantasy rather than attempting to seriously solve problems that worsen daily.

What time is it?  It is high time to seek the face of God and get His direction for the seemingly intractable problems that challenge our world.  If we ask, He promised He would give us direction (Isaiah 30:21). He also promised that if we would call on Him, He would deliver us (John 5:14-15).  Let us seek God because not only does He know the time, but He also knows what we can do to save our world.

Romans 13:11-13

New International Version

11 And do this, understanding the present time: The hour has already come for you to wake up from your slumber, because our salvation is nearer now than when we first believed.
12 The night is nearly over; the day is almost here. So let us put aside the deeds of darkness and put on the armor of light.
13 Let us behave decently, as in the daytime, not in carousing and drunkenness, not in sexual immorality and debauchery, not in dissension and jealousy

Proverbs 6:9-11

New International Version

9 How long will you lie there, you sluggard? When will you get up from your sleep?

10 A little sleep, a little slumber, a little folding of the hands to rest—

11 and poverty will come on you like a thief and scarcity like an armed man.

Isaiah 30:21

New International Version

21 Whether you turn to the right or to the left, your ears will hear a voice behind you, saying, “This is the way; walk in it.”

John 5:14-15

New International Version

14 This is the confidence we have in approaching God: that if we ask anything according to his will, he hears us.
15 And if we know that he hears us—whatever we ask—we know that we have what we asked of him.
