Let’s Change Some Lives Today

In the September 2013 issue of Psychology Today, Lisa Firestone, in article entitled, “How Can You Stop A Suicide” wrote, “When you suspect someone is in trouble, you can offer them support and assistance getting help. …Open up the subject, look them in the eye and show them you care and want to be there for them. You should do what you can to help the person feel safe and free to talk.” Bill Withers, the singer-songwriter wrote, “Lean on Me.”  Part of the lyrics are, “Lean on me when you're not strong, I'll be your friend, I'll help you carry on. For it won't be long 'til I'm gonna need somebody to lean on.”

Many people would love to hear a kind word from others or get even a small bit of help.  The Bible agrees about the importance of a timely word, which can mean the world to someone (Proverbs 15:23).  The right word at the right time can be beautiful to a person who feels they have little hope (Proverbs 24:11).  Although the world can be lonely, just one friend can be crucial when things are confusing, ominous, or depressing.  A good friend can get another through looming obstacles when they lend a helping hand (Ecclesiastes 4:9-11).

Kirk Franklin’s song entitled “Smile” has the catchy lyrics, “I smile, even though I hurt, see I smile. I know God is working so I smile. Even though I've been here for a while I smile.”  Even your smile may save a life. Your handshake, pat on the back, or quick encouragement may turn the tide for someone today.  Let us take every opportunity to be a light, a difference, an encourager, and an inspirer of those around you.  Your hug can be life changing.  Be a life changer today!

Proverbs 15:23
New International Version (NIV)
23 A person finds joy in giving an apt reply—and how good is a timely word!

Proverbs 25:11
Amplified Bible (AMP)
11 Like apples of gold in settings of silver is a word spoken at the right time.

Ecclesiastes 4:9-11
New International Version (NIV)
9 Two are better than one, because they have a good return for their labor:
10 If either of them falls down, one can help the other up. But pity anyone who falls and has no one to help them up.
11 Also, if two lie down together, they will keep warm. But how can one keep warm alone?
